Exhibition ‘The Meeting’ November 9 – December 20. 2013
The painting “The Meeting” is inspired by Gustave Coubert’s “Good Day, Monsieur Courbet”. But in the painting of Jeppe Lauge the hiker is not meeting his patron, but a wall of trees: A chaos of overgrown nature that is blocking the way of the figure. Is this an image of a meeting with nature -or culture- where the tree-trunks are like a fence we try to break through? Or is it - as in “Good Day, Monsieur Courbet” - a comment on the contemporary cultural relationship between the artist (here also represented as a hiker) and today's art-market, galleries and art-institutions?
